The competition for development of a WWII
airport in the center of Reykjavik called for
a strategy for the city’s future as a leading
European capital. Instead of rejecting the
airport’s legacy and starting from scratch, the
idea of embracing the old constrains of the
triangular “land-art” of the concrete runway
was proposed. Like Roman ruins that lay
at the foundation of many European cities,
Vatnsmyri airport will become the seed for
urbanism in Reykjavik.
