The 28 original townships of CNY Military Tract were created in 1792 by Simeon DeWitt. How has CNY, its land use, land ownership, and understanding of land transform in the last 223 years?

Dear NYS Historian!

We are working on a new atlas of Central NY. This project is supported by the 2015 NYSCA grant and is meant to revisit the last iconic representation of our area, the 1792 Military Tract of Central New York drawn by Simeon DeWitt. We are curious to see what happened to the original 28 townships, how they evolved over time, what is happening there now.

Please help us with any notable and critical information about your town. Use the timeline provided and return in the envelope that we have included. Your timely response will be deeply appreciated by the Sural Atlas of Central New York development team.
