Teaching Farm
Reuse master plan and building conversion, Georgetown, MD
An old farm in Maryland, a typical American homestead and supporting buildings ensemble was re-conceived as a teaching facility for sustainable farming. Adaptive reuse of the existing agrarian structure for conversion into temporary residence for students of sustainable farming practiced by Colchester Farm. The conversion utilized the existing structure, special organization and ubiquitous and inexpensive agrarian materials. The disused silo on site is kept as a visual marker for the site (and as an exterior outdoor shower).
As pilot education-through-construction program, A+M directed a design-build course at Temple University that resulted in construction of a public space outside of the converted farmer dormitory.
